Thirty years of Montana tax work.
Meridian CPA Group was founded in Bozeman in 1994, when the city was a fraction of its current size. We've grown alongside it, adding staff and specialties as our clients' situations changed. What hasn't changed is how we work: you deal with the same person every year, they know your history, and they're reachable when you have a question outside of April.
Our practice covers individual filers, small businesses, and agricultural clients. Montana has its own tax quirks, and Bozeman's growth has created planning situations that national chain firms are not set up to handle well. We are.

Before your first appointment.
What's the deadline for my Montana state taxes?
Montana individual income tax returns are due April 15, the same day as your federal return. Extensions give you until October 15 to file, not to pay. If you owe, estimate and pay by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties. We help clients estimate this every spring so there are no surprises.
Do you work with farmers and ranchers?
Yes. Agricultural clients are a meaningful part of our practice. Farm and ranch tax is its own specialty. We handle Schedule F, self-employment tax, livestock depreciation, conservation easements, and the cash-method accounting rules that apply to agriculture. We know when you can defer crop insurance proceeds and how Montana ag property tax treatment affects your federal planning.
When should I switch from a sole proprietor to an S-corp?
Generally, once net self-employment income is consistently above $40,000 to $50,000 per year, the S-corp election starts making mathematical sense. The right threshold depends on your income, the nature of your work, and Montana's filing fees. We model the numbers before making a recommendation. The answer is not always yes.
What do I need to bring to my first appointment?
For individuals: last year's return, all W-2s and 1099s, a mortgage statement if you own, and notes on significant life changes. For new business clients: entity formation documents, a summary of income and expenses, and prior business returns. We send a detailed checklist when you schedule so nothing gets missed.
